John Ford shot nine films in Monument Valley and in doing so taught audiences what the American West is supposed to look like. The valley floor belongs to the Navajo Nation; the famous highway view sits just north of the state line.
The pull-out is legal and safe. Standing in the middle of the road is neither — this is an active highway with fast traffic and blind rises.
Come at sunrise for empty tarmac and side-lit rock. By nine the shoulder is lined with cars doing the same thing.
