Delicate Arch After Dark
The most photographed rock in America is a completely different object at midnight.
You have seen it on a licence plate. You have probably not seen it lit only by starlight, with the last of the day still bleeding along the La Sal Mountains behind it.
Delicate Arch is a 52-foot freestanding fin of Entrada sandstone, and the whole reason it is famous is scale confusion: photographed from the bowl below, it reads as a monument. Walk up to it and it is stranger and more fragile than the picture suggests.
At night the crowd thins to a dozen head-torches and the arch stops performing. This is the version worth the drive: no queue for the frame, the rock holding the day's heat, and the Milky Way arriving over the top of it in spring and autumn.
Park rangers permit night hiking. Nothing about the trail is technical, but there are no railings and the slickrock ledge in the final hundred metres is genuinely exposed.
